Our complete state-of-the-art hot shop for glass blowing offers classes for the beginner to the advanced glass artist. Classes are perfect for adults and teens looking for the excitement of learning a new skill or perfecting the craft.  For safety, please wear 100% cotton clothing, long pants and closed-toe shoes.  Located in Southwest Michigan, West Michigan Glass Art Center is the hotspot of fun things to do in Kalamazoo! Classes include all glass, supplies and tools.

An Evening with Hot Glass

     Invite your friends to join you for an evening out and learn the basics of glassblowing at the furnace. Swing out a hot  glass bubble to make a vase, bowl or drinking glass. This adult and teen class can also be scheduled by appointment.  Put this class on your list of fun things to do in Kalamazoo!

 




Glassblowing I

Prerequisite: Age 14 & up, no experience necessary.

     Designed for the beginning glassblower, this class will offer students instruction on the fundamentals of working and forming molten glass into basic shapes such as cups, bowls and vases.  Students will become familiar with traditional glassblowing equipment and movement in the hot shop.  This is the perfect class to get a taste for glassblowing and its endless possibilities!




One-Day Glassblowing Workshop

Saturday, May 12, 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. (HS1242)
Tuesday, June 5, 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. (HS1243)
Prerequisite: Ages 13 & up.  No experience necessary.
Maximum: 4 students
$160 members/$185 non-members

   Explore the ancient art of glassblowing by gathering molten glass onto a blowpipe and learning how to use traditional glassblowing tools.   This is an introductory level workshop.  Students will learn from demonstration by the instructor and spend the first half of the day learning how to make a cup.  During the second half, students will make a larger hand-blown vase or bowl.


 

Garden Globe Workshop

Maximum: 4 students

   Using traditional glassblower’s tools and techniques, learn to gather glass at the furnace and blow a bubble.  You will make a hanging hollow glass gazing globe for your garden.

Mondays, 3 weeks, May 7 - 21, 6 - 9 p.m. (HS1246)
Prerequisite: Age 14 and up, Evening with Hot Glass or equivalent.
Maximum: 4 students
$170 members/$190 non-members

    Fill your garden with color even before your flowers bloom.  During the class you will create 3 unique projects.  First, using traditional glassblower’s tools and techniques, learn to gather at the furnace and blow a bubble.  You will make a hanging hollow glass gazing globe for your garden or to hang on your porch.  Second, you’ll create a colorful hot glass sculpture that you will be able to display on a metal rod in your garden.  Finally, make garden glass jewels to place among evergreens and groundcover

Glassblowing Clinic

Refresh and review by appointment.
Instructor: Staff
$55 per hour per person. Minimum two hours per person.  (HS1247)

One-on-one instruction. Let us know what techniques you want to review in the hot shop. A longer appointment may be necessary depending on the focus of the glass and/or technical problem that needs to be resolved.  Some review ideas: Goblets, handles and stems, color techniques, project consultation, annealing programs, and lampshades.  Please call us at 269-552-9802 to schedule your glassblowing clinic.

Hot Glass Paperweight

Fridays, 1-3 p.m.  (HS1248)
Prerequisite: Ages 14 & up, no experience necessary. 
Maximum: 4 students  
$60 per person, Two people for $100.
